The EAA was launched in Brussels in 1994 after a four year gestation period. The 14 member organisations (2008) from 11 European nations meet annually at a General Assembly hosted by a member country. Between general assemblies members meet and work in two standing Subgroups dealing with sea water and fresh water issues. Add-hoc groups are formed around specific issues in need of special care, e.g. a Task Force Cormorants. EAA sits in a number of advisory bodies with regards to EU's fisheries and environment policy shaping.
The ESB's fishery role is statutory, however its provision of amenities on the waters it operates is based on a sense of good citizenship. In places like Leixlip on the Liffey it provides still water canoeing facilities as well as picnic and recreational areas for the public. Other facilities have forest walks and certain reservoirs (like Blessington lakes, resting places for a migratory Greylag population) have designated sanctuary areas.

Founded eight years ago, the ACI is affiliated to the Irish Sports Council and has become the recognised umbrella organization for the five disciplines of angling at national level. The ACI is the forum for debate and discussion of the issues that are of most concern to anglers and provides the platform for anglers to address and find resolution for these issues. It is the powerhouse where anglers can develop strategies to meet the demands on angling in the present and for the future.
An important objective of the ACI is to present angling concerns to the highest authorities and to ensure that the voice of angling is heard clearly in the halls of legislation.
