Juvenile structures in NCFFI
2010 has seen more NCFFI organized junior competitions than ever before with the Junior All Ireland, Junior Canals Championships, Juvenile Still-Water Championship and most recently the Barrow Clubs Junior Championship. The NCFFI was also heavily involved with IFI’s, Fisheries Awareness Week in May where the committee and its members took part in the National Youth Angling Expo in Howth, the Dublin Angling Initiative stand at the Angling Show in Swords and a IFI Open Day on Creevy Lake, Co.Monaghan. In addition to this the NCFFI also hosted an Introduction to Coarse Angling for Disabled Anglers and continues run events for the disabled.
Coaching Developments
From January to April 2010 Der Casey completed a Coaching Ireland tutor training course, travelling from Waterford to Limerick over 5 weekends and in September of this year saw the first of many Introductory Coach Training course’s rolled out in the Munster area. This course is and will be available to all NCFFI members’ country wide.
The NCFFI in conjunction with the Angling Council of Ireland has also been at the forefront of Child Protection with the appointment of Der as the designated signatory for Garda Vetting and the adoption of our Garda Vetting Policy We are currently investigating the best way to develop similar structures in Northern Ireland with the aid of Sports NI. This year also saw the appointment of a Children’s Officer to the Federation with a direction to all member clubs to appoint an officer of their own.
Complaints and Discipline
2010 saw the introduction of a Complaints & Discipline Procedure, a Code of Conduct Book (sent to all member club secretaries) and NCFFI Membership Cards complete with insurance details, with the aim of all of these to help with a smooth running of the Federation into the future and to bring the federation in line with all other sports NGB’s affiliated to the Irish Sports Council.
Funding
As with all Federations and Associations in Ireland funding is always a major issue so we were very happy to see the continued financial support from PreBait.com (Mr. Fiachra McCloskey) for not just our National Team but the re-designing of the NCFFI’s web site and the new NCFFI logo, in addition to PreBait.com we also secured sponsorship from IFI, the Loughs Agency, Waterways Ireland, Fishing Masters Ltd. (Trapper & Robinson) and also many of the retail angling outlets across Ireland.
New Initiatives
As the Federation moves forward we are now constantly in consultation with Inland Fisheries Ireland and together with IFI staff we developed, piloted and delivered a Freshwater Biodiversity Science & Physical Education Programme for National Schools which has already been delivered to over 3000 pupils. We also prepared a document for Dr. C.Byrne CEO of IFI on a Water Keepers Role and on the Four Fish Rule. In addition this year saw IFI introduce the CAISIE programme on invasive species to juniors at both the Junior Canals Championship and the Junior All Ireland. The NCFFI are also in discussions with Waterways Ireland and we have submitted our view on their new bye-laws.
The International Scene
As most may already know this year saw one of the best results for Ireland on the International stage with Cathal Hughes from Galway clinching the Silver Medal and the Team finishing fourth in the World Championships in Spain this year. Hopefully this has set a standard for Irish Teams to come and with the NCFFI hosting the World Feeder Championships in 2013 who knows maybe the team will be on the podium in the not too distant future.
These are just some of the accomplishments for the past year: as we do not wish to bore you after all. As we move forward to 2011 the NCFFI and its members will continue to promote all the best in Coarse Angling in Ireland, working together as a team for the common good.
The NCFFI would like to thank all who helped the Federation this year whether it was hands-on support, financial or with raising the profile of the Federation.
We would also like to thank Eric Parkes and all involved with the Irish Anglers Digest and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
