The Importance of Coaching

We recognise the importance of coaching in the future of our sport and as members of the Angling Council of Ireland, ACI we are able to deliver a programme to our members. The ACI worked hard to bring angling in line with other national sports and delivered the first recognised all discipline angling coaching programme for Ireland. Recognised by Sport Ireland and Sports Northern Ireland the courses introduce coaching strategies developed by Sport Ireland Coaching with the ACI.

Recognition of angling as a sport by the Sports Ireland and Sports Northern Ireland gives the ACI a base for negotiation with official bodies on issues that relate to angling. The structured coaching approach delivered by the tutors mean that future generations of anglers will be coached in a manner that will benefit the angler and the sport. The individual angler can now use the angler pathway to be coached to whatever level of participation they so wish.

The courses are subsidised for NCFFI members meaning we can deliver to our members for the low cost of €20 at Introductory level, usual cost €100. Free vetting is available to all our members.

Coaching Education Programme

Introductory Level Coaching Course

This provides you with the entry disciplines required to supervise anglers of all ages on the bank.

We open debate on adult learning styles, motivation and the role of the coach.  The concept of structured learning, reflection and feedback systems is introduced along with sessions on child and vulnerable adults welfare, disability and health & safety.

Coach Professional Development Training CPD – Coaching Anglers with a Disability

Essential for the safe supervision of the less able and those with special needs.

Coach Professional Development Training CPD – Water Safety Training

Another must have for those supervising events by or on the water.  In the morning we are in the classroom and cover sessions on risk assessment & management including a detailed review of buoyancy aids.  The afternoon is on the bank and covers defensive swimming, throw rope rescue and safe wading protocols.

Level One Programme

Only coaches with a track record of participation in angling coaching who carry out the Coach Professional Training CPD will be considered for this advance level course.

Over the three days the candidate will be required to prepare and deliver structured programmes of coaching.  The demands of the theory syllabus will be best met by experienced practising coaches.

Our coaching programmes are certified by Sport Ireland Coaching with whom the GAA, FAI, IRFU all work along with 60 other sports against which the coaching programmes are benchmarked.

The Sport Ireland Coaching have agreed a mechanism for recognition of coaching qualifications certified outside the state. Across the EU national coaching bodies have their qualifications benchmarked. Anglers certified by any of the national bodies benchmarked in the EU, i.e 1st 4 Sport can have their qualification recognised by joining an affiliated club, and completing the CPD for coaching anglers with disabilities.

Safeguarding Children in Angling

Whether or not you wish to take up the coaching pathway we recommend Garda/PSNI vetting for all but it is essential and obligatory from 11Dec17 for all persons with access to children and vulnerable adults and those making decisions regarding the welfare of children at local, regional and national level.

Our Safeguarding policies are currently being updated – contact us for details
