Team Ireland rank 7th at the 7th Fips-ed World Feeder Championships in Portugal

Feeder Team Ireland achieve their best ranking to date since their historic Silver Medal win of 2014. The team are now safely back on Irish shores after a hot and exhausting week in Portugal. The River Raia near the town of Cabecao proved to be a difficult venue, weedy in places fishing for species unknown to us in Ireland such as carp, barbel and bleak in temperatures at times reaching 48’.

Team Manager Brenton Sweeney says:- I was confident of a good position presenting an invigorated team at the championships this year. The bleak fishing on Saturday suited us well and we achieved 3 x 5th , a joint 7th and 8th in the 22 peg sections with all anglers in the top 4 for a 3rd team position overall. It was a great start and we hoped for that podium finish. It wasn’t to be and a change in the weather for Sunday meant a tougher day as the bleak we had been catching shallow all went to the bottom, just one carp and we would have had a medal! We finished just 5.5 points away from a podium finish and a very commendable ranking of 7 out of the 22 competing nations. The team are to be congratulated for the effort put in to achieve this great result with a particular well done to Rimantas and Johnny for whom it was their first introduction to International Competition. Particular thanks goes to Philip Jackson, Paul Leese and Paul Heaney plus Sharon, Jayne and Jurgita for the all-important management support and bank running; without all their help, we wouldn’t have done so well. I would like to add that I hope our presence on the world stage serves to encourage the growing number of up and coming feeder anglers in Ireland to pursue their sport. In particular the junior anglers for whom we will run a national competition in October.

The NCFFI would like to congratulate Brenton and the team and thank sponsors Sensas Ireland, Irish Bait & Tackle Ltd and Daiwa UK for their support. NEXT UP is the NCFFI All-Ireland Feeder Club Championships on Lough Muckno on Saturday & Sunday 8th & 9th of July. The event also serves as the qualifier for the team to represent Ireland at the 2nd FIPS-ed Feeder Club Championships in Belarus in 2018. Applications to
