Angling on Inniscarra Lake

Coachford Village is the gateway to the Inniscarra Reservoir and the 2.8km Greenway which provides secure parking behind your peg with other stretches of water such as the Garden Centre close by.  Club and leisure anglers are more than welcome with local angling club members more than happy to provide advice or help arrange a friendly match. In the village you purchase your permit, buy bait and tackle-up whilst staying in one of a number of B&B’s in the area. Close by are several hotels and restaurants that welcome the anglers and Blarney and Cork City are just a short drive away. For those bringing the family there are plenty of attractions nearby; a little further afield there is Killarney and Kenmare where there are many things to do, and not far from some excellent beaches.

The Lee Valley encompasses many small towns providing a wealth of history and culture in this area of natural beauty; yet the vibrant Cork City is just half and hour away. Close by is Kinsale and the start of the Wild Atlantic Way the longest coastal driving experience in the world. www.wildatlanticway.com The county has miles of salmon and trout waters and Cork and Kinsale harbours provide the largest variety of fish species in Ireland.

Access to the region by road and air is good with Cork airport and ferry ports close by and Dublin just a three hours drive away.

FISHING ON INNISCARRA

A long standing favourite with the anglers Inniscarra Lake is now a world class angling venue. Present in the reservoir are bream ranging from 1kg+, skimmers, hybrids, roach and rudd in abundance with other species such as tench, carp, perch, brown trout and gudgeon present. Famous for the championship match stretch, the Coachford Greenway there are also a number of other venues in the area to suit both the match and leisure angler.

THE GREENWAY

The Coachford Greenway is a multi-purpose amenity for everyone to enjoy, providing cycling, walking and angling for all. The walkway which has National Trails status was developed with the angler in mind providing access to the water whilst preserving the natural beauty of the fishery. Âvalable to the angler is a 2.8km stretch of bank accessed from a single carriageway road with regular parking bays and access points. A world class angling venue the Greenway has already hosted both senior and junior world championships. The Greenway section of the reservoir has depth ranges from 6 to 9 metres at 30 metres out from the bank

VEHICULAR ACCESS TO THE GREENWAY

Access for vehicles is provided by contacting O’Callaghan’s Bar in Coachford on 00 353 (0) 217 334023. You will be asked to sign an indemnity and provided with a key in exchange for a €50 refundable deposit. The less able should note that bringing a vehicle closer to the venue is a benefit but the wheelchair user will still require assistance to the shore. A number of accommodation providers are keyholders in order to provide access to their guests.

Where permission has been granted the following must be observed;

  • A 15km per hour speed limited must be observed. The walkway is used by many walkers which include small children.
  • You are responsible for ensuring the gate remains locked at all times
  • Do not block the Greeenway, use the parking bays provided.
  • Vehicles are only permitted on Coachford Greenway during day time hours between 8am to 8pm.
  • Dogs must be kept under control and on the leads; cleanup after your dog.
  • All users must observe signage and emergency numbers
  • Inniscarra Lake Tourism Development Ltd reserve the right to refuse access
  • Please check to ensure there are no organised events on the Greenway

Vehicular access is a privilege on this amenity not a right; failure to comply to safety regulations will result in the withdrawal of the access for all.

GARDEN CENTRE

Access to this popular stretch providing 35 pegs is via Griffin’s Garden Centre near Dripsey, with kind permission from Margaret and John There is plenty of parking available just a short walk away from your swim.

INISHLENA DEEPS & WALL

2km west of the Inniscarra Dam there are up to 20 swims available to fish. The Deeps section has swims for around 12 and a small car park for 6 cars. Another 10 swims are available on the Wall section where there is parking on a disused road behind. not suitable for the less able. This area must be approached with care

GRAVEYARD

Known locally as ‘St.Johns’ this venue fishing into the bay is just a 5 minute drive from Coachford village. Here are there approx. 30 swims with parking on a nearby lane.  The shore is reached through an even meadow with a steep incline and is therefore not suitable for the less able. Anglers are asked not to obstruct the farm entrance and park well back from the entry.

ROOVES BAY

A popular spot close to the entrance of the Greenway.

FOUNTAIN HOUSE

The upper lake at Fountain House is shallow especially on the pole line but the 20 available swims offer good hybrid fishing.

PUMP HOUSE

1km west of the Inniscarra dam this venue has swims for 20 with a small car park for up to 10 cars.

A FISHING PERMIT IS REQUIRED TO FISH ON INNISCARRA

Senior Annual Permit €30, Senior Weekly Permit, €15 Senior Daily Permit €10

Junior Annual Permit, €15 Junior Weekly Permit, €10 Junior Daily Permit ‚€5
