International Predator Manager Announcement

After a fantasic ten years representing lure angling in Ireland International Team Manager, Tomi Kurman steps down.
At a committee meeting of 16th of April, the Executive regrettably accepted the decision by Tomi to retire from the position of Team Ireland Manager and to leave the committee. The NCFFI Executive, on behalf of its members and all those who have represented #Teamireland thank Tomi for his commitment to lure angling sport and wish him well for the future.

Tomi Kurman says:- . .

First on the scene in 2013, Tomi and his angling partner took third position and the bronze medal at the first Lure Angling World Championships hosted in Ireland. Since then, he has fielded teams in both the shore and boat disciplines all around the world and brought a further three world championships to our shores. When he is not on the water successfully guiding visiting anglers to realise their best catches on Lough Corrib, he finds the time to be part of one of the best lure angling duos on the island. Tomi and Jacek Gorny compete on the competition circuit as much as they can with numerous wins under their belt.

Whilst Tomi will manage the 2024 team and remains part of organising committee for the World Championships Boat Angling with Lures to be hosted in Ireland this October, he is keen that preparations are in put in place for the team of 2025. We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from experienced anglers to lead our lure angling teams to the world stage in 2025 and beyond.

The NCFFI are looking for a motivated enthusiastic Manager to take on this voluntary role for the next three-year term. The ideal candidate will have experience of lure fishing and a strong sense of ethics and fair play. They will be required to plan and deliver three weekends of qualifiers annually, selecting and leading teams to the FIPSed World Boat Angling Championships. The successful applicant with expert predator knowledge will adopt all protocols and assume a position on the NCFFI Committee meeting monthly. Those interested may express their interest here

Aspiring young anglers enjoy the first youth sessions

Aspiring young anglers attended the first rounds of the 2024 youth sessions in dry but coll conditions. Concentrating on pole techniques, the angling for silver fish at Ballyshunnock Reservoir on Saturday was testing for some with rewards higher on Sunday when the group landed 230kg of carp between them Oaklands lake. Irish Bait and Tackle Limited kindly sponsored live bait and everyone had an enjoyable weekend.

Masters and Under 25’s Feeder Squads Announced

NCFFI Team Ireland Feeder Manager Brenton Sweeney announces two further squads to compete in world championships this year. to the FIPSed calendar is the category for an Under 25 Feeder Team to complement the Masters and compete on the same venue in Hungary this October.

Selected for the Under 25’s are John Browne, Brian Clark and Charlie Richards who each have international experience along with Dominykas Kuklys and Sarunas Zenkovas who are both making their debut on the world stage. The Masters squad will consist of Niall McKitterick, Colin Martin, Sean Murray, Jack Tisdall and Vincent Walsh.

Brenton Sweeney says:- ‘Its great to see youth angling recognised as feeder fishing continues to grow in popularity and I’m delighted to present two strong teams at each end of the spectrum. To fish the famous rowing coarse at Szeged will be a fantastic experience in itself.

Unsure if I will be able to attend the championships, I have nominated Jack Tisdall and Adrian Browne to manage the teams on the bank in Hungary with Jack already working on the logistics for travel. The Under 25’s will benefit greatly from the experience of the Masters, and I’m delighted to see them getting together for training on the 18th of May where we hope to be joined by members of the current Feeder Club World Champions Lurgan Coarse Angling Club and Bronze medalists CM Lakelands Feeder Club.’

Youth Angling Sessions 2024

The NCFFI invites young anglers from novices to the competent to join a series of sessions covering a range of float fishing techniques.

Whats more, those aspiring to compete on the world stage will get to fish alongside those already on the international scene as we look to form a pool of anglers to progress to championship level.

So, if you want to learn new skills or join the Team Ireland Pathway come and take part!

The programme starts with a weekend on Ballyshunnock Reservoir Saturday 13th and Oaklands lake Sunday 14th. ** Live bait will be provided for all with the compliments of Irish Bait and Tackle Limited

Whilst Team Ireland will not field a team at the World Championships in Serbia this year, Youth Team Manager Adrian Brown invites you to express your interest for the chance of a place on the 2025 squad. We aim to present U15, U20 and U25 teams to the championships in Spain.

In addition you can put your name forward for a place on Team Ireland for the Celtic Cup. This competition designed to introduce new talent to international fishing takes place in Scotland this October.

NCFFI Team Ireland Feeder announced

NCFFI Team Ireland Feeder Manager Brenton Sweeney has announced his team of six to fish the World Championships of 2024.

Selected for the squad are Michael Buchwalder, Tony Hopkins, Johnny McKinley, James O’Doherty and Charlie Richards who this year will be joined by Rory Dunne who returns to the international scene for the first time since 2011. The 13th edition of the championship of nations will take place at Le Merida, Spain in May.

Brenton says:- ‘With the venue finally announced I’m delighted to put forward this team of experienced anglers as we continue to seek a podium finish overseas. I’m pleased to welcome Rory who brings us years of angling experience and who incidentally last represented Ireland on the same venue.’

With the continued enthusiasm for feeder fishing a larger number of anglers expressed an interest in the teams for 2024. Brenton continues to review those applicants and will announce the squads for both the Masters and new for 2024, the Under 25’s accordingly. Applicants will be provided the opportunity to provide support for the squad on the bank and gain experience for the future.

Float Team Manager Apointment

The NCFFI is pleased to announce the appointment of Jason Ward to the position of Float Team Manager for the next three-year term. Jason, a supply chain professional is also treasurer of the Tourism Association in his hometown of Kiltimagh, County Mayo. Well known in the coarse angling community Jason has over 40 years angling experience, including 20 years on the international scene. Since making his debut at the Six Nations in 2002 he has represented Team Ireland at various World, European and Home International championships and was once ranked in the top 20 float anglers in the world.

Jason says: – “It is my ambition to attract more anglers to the international scene, nurturing this talent to a level where we not only participate but really compete on the world stage. Whilst Ireland has a relatively small sport angling community, within it there are some exceptionally good anglers for whom I hope to make fishing at this level more affordable.”

Having been part of Team Ireland finishing 4th in 2010 and 2019 Jason is keen to use his extensive experience to realise a future podium finish for the Float Teams. He is looking forward to working with the Youth Team Manager to help develop the next generation to fish with us at this level for years to come. Please join us in welcoming him to the role.

With a new manager in place the NCFFI wishes to give the opportunity to those who have not already done so to express their interest in a place on Team Ireland for 2024. In addition, the Celtic Cup competition provides the for those who are not selected for the world stage to experience fishing to international rule. And we now give the opportunity to those who would specifically like to fish on mixed teams to include juniors and women to express their interest for the event to be hosted by Scotland in October 2024. Expressions of interest for the float teams are now open to 31st December after which time the Managers will make their selections.

Appointed delegates from Affiliated and Associated clubs may attend with prior notification.

This notice invites, from affiliated clubs, motions to be received by the secretary before 13th December 2023. New clubs affiliated from 2022 to 2023 remain as Associate members until formal adoption by the AGM. Associate members may not vote or submit motions.

A copy of the Agenda, and a list of motions for discussion shall be given to each affiliated club not less than 14 days before the date of the Annual General Meeting.

Two members of each Affiliated club are invited to vote at AGM. Club delegates other than officers identified on affiliation, will need to bring with them, written authorisation that they are the clubs appointed representatives.

All Ireland Youth Feeder Championships U25

It was fantastic to see new faces turnout for the U25 Championships at Annaghierin Lake as young men and women representing clubs across the island fished a four-hour match on this super venue, a wild fishery with excellent access.

Congratulations to the U25 champion of 2023, Charlie Richards picks up the trophy for his top weight of 5.600kg and 88 fish mostly roach with a few skimmers late in the day. James O’Doherty in second place had mostly small roach for 4.800kg whereas Sarunas Zenkovas managed a few skimmers for third place with 3.975kg.

Feeder Manager Brenton Sweeney says:- “It was good to see a healthy number of young anglers fishing a feeder match in both the U15 and U25 categories. The fishing was tough and hard on some of the younger anglers new to fishing unstocked venues, but an enjoyable day was had all round. Thank you to all who took part, help from senior anglers and the parents who made it possible for the U15’s to come. With a call out for anglers interested in the new U25 World Feeder Championships it was also great opportunity for me to observe the techniques on the bank.”

As with the U15’s the top three anglers took home medals and tackle prizes with everyone picking up some terminal tackle and groundbait. Former World Champion Charlie Richards is already well kitted out and is offering his prize of a Trabucco Selektor XS Carp Feeder rod in a random draw on his facebook page – well done Charlie.

All Ireland Youth Feeder Championships U15

Ireland’s aspiring feeder anglers from across the provinces took part in the All-Ireland Championships today. It was a bright day at Annaghierin Lake in County Cavan, but the fishing was tough for everyone at this wild fishery chosen for its ease of accessibility.

The two groups U15, and U25’s fished a three-hour match for mostly roach, some perch and the bonus skimmer.

Congratulations to the U15 champion of 2023, Markas Cmukas picks up the trophy for his 1.350kg winning weight. Runner-up for the second-year running was Jack Norris with 1.050kg and in third Tiernan O’Brien with 0.950kg. The winners were rewarded with medals and a selection of tackle prizes.

Not everyone caught but all went home happy with a selection of goodies for their next fishing experience. In addition a draw took place for those not in the top 3 and James Wellwood won a 6m whip donated by Niall McKitterick, Browning Team Ireland.

Feeder Manager Brenton Sweeney wishes to thank al those who took part along with the parents who made it possible for them. Also, to Rimantas, Graham, Nick and Niall for helping out.

Celtic Cup, Newry Canal

The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland, NCFFI are delighted to present the Celtic Cup angling competition on the 14th and 15th October. The Newry Canal, specifically the Albert Basin and the developed ‘coal yard’ match stretch is the venue for next weekend’s Championships.

Vincent Walsh, former Float Team Manager in conjunction with his counterparts in Scotland and Wales have come together with the event designed to provide the opportunity to fish to international rule for youths, women, and seniors not currently on the world scene.

It’s the biggest coarse angling event on the canal since the Home International of 2015. Preparation and practice takes place over two days from Thursday 12th October when the anglers will learn together about team fishing and all that is involved to take part in international competition, from the rules to bait and tactics. While the match itself takes place on Saturday and Sunday, fishing from 11am to 3pm. Spectators are welcome.

The NCFFI worked with the Loughs Agency and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to open this middle bank venue to the coarse angler back in 2015 and we welcome their continued support for the event. The angling facility compliments the various facilities in the canal area which includes the Newry Canal Way Walk.

Team Ireland will present three mixed teams of four selecting participants from those who have expressed interest for international competition previously and are keen to get involved. It is hoped that events such as these will encourage more to come forward.
