Friendly Home International River Bann

The Autumnal Lower River Bann was the venue for a friendly team competition at the weekend. Team Ireland joined by Team Scotland fished alongside East Belfast Coarse Angling Club and a Youth Select team including some members of the U15 squad.

Fishing the competition presented a great opportunity for practise on Mid-Ulster Council’s angling facility at Portglenone currently being upgraded to host the European Championships in 2019. The two-day event saw the teams all come together and spend the weekend in the local area enjoying the camaraderie that comes with team fishing. The competition was fished to CIPS rule with bait limits with fresh bait supplies from Irish Bait and Tackle Limited on Saturday.

Fishing against a strong upstream wind on Saturday was tough but James O’Doherty Angling for Team Ireland netted 9.640kg of roach for a match win on day one helping the team to finish on 11 points and a great 8 point head start. The heavy frost on Sunday saw a smaller stamp of roach and fewer bonus fish but a good performance from Team Scotland saw them finish just one point behind Team Ireland. Well done to James Dornom best individual with a perfect 2 point score and to Ireland’s John Browne who finished 5th individually against this fine group of senior anglers.
